Getting Started
To get started you will need to apply for a provisional driving licence. You can apply for a licence 3 months before your 17th birthday unless you are disabled and receive the mobility component of disability living allowance. Then you can apply for a provisional licence 3 months before your 16th birthday and start lessons on your 16th birthday. To apply for your licence get a form D1 from post office or the DVLA form ordering service and send it off with proof of ID,a recent passport size photo and a fee of £50.00.Once you have received your licence comes the difficult task of choosing an Instructor from the hundreds in your area.Personal referral is probably the best route to undertake and here at Parade School Of Motoring we get a Large percentage of our students this way. Some driving schools will use trainee driving instructors but here at Parade we only use fully qualified Instructors. The way to spot a trainee is that they will have a pink licence badge and a fully qualified instructor will have a green badge.
Your Instructor will check that you have both parts of your provisional driving licence this includes the photocard and the paper counterpart of your licence. The licence is only valid if you have both parts confirmed by the fact you would be unable to take either the theory or practical tests without either of them. After checking your licence you will be required to read a number plate from a distance of 21.5 metres,
The first lesson if your a complete novice will include a full controls lesson to get you acquainted with the various controls of the vehicle and a cockpit drill to make sure you are in the correct driving position and can reach all pedals and steering wheel comfortably. The cockpit drill we use at Parade is door,seat,steering,seat-belt,mirrors.
After the cockpit drill we will move onto moving off safely and stopping safely using the m-s-m routine mirror-signal-maneouvre.Gear changing will also be taught on the first lesson which should result in the pupil being able to change upto 2nd gear by the end of the lesson.
